Saginaw Alumnae Chapter, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Delta GEMS Application

The Saginaw Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is a local non-profit organization dedicated to fostering sisterhood, scholarship, and service. Rooted in Christian principles, our national organization boasts a membership of over 250,000 college-educated women and spans more than 900 chapters worldwide.

Delta GEMS (GROWING AND EMPOWERING MYSELF SUCCESSFULLY) Program serves as an extension of the esteemed Dr. Betty Shabazz Delta Academy Program. Crafted to "catch the dreams" of African-American at-risk adolescent girls aged 14-18 or in grades 9-12, Delta GEMS is a community service initiative of the Saginaw Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. The program aims to cultivate strong, confident, and respectful young ladies, equipping them with the skills and mindset necessary to actively shape their own success and contribute meaningfully to society.

Delta GEMS is designed for:

  • Young women with untapped potential who require guidance, support, and skills to realize success.

  • Young women eager to develop leadership aptitude.

  • Young women actively exploring college and/or career pathways.

  • Young women seeking encouragement and support in their pursuit of higher education.

  • Young women identified by educational institutions, religious organizations, youth groups, and/or former Delta Academy or Delteens participants.

Objectives of the Delta GEMS Committee: The Delta GEMS Committee serves as a motivational catalyst targeting African-American female teenagers. It aims to enhance their knowledge and awareness of contemporary women's issues and concerns. This will be achieved through various workshops focusing on:

1. Growing Myself Successfully:

  • Instilling a dedication to academic excellence.

  • Cultivating compassion, community-mindedness, and active engagement in service learning and community service opportunities.

2. Empowering Myself Successfully:

  • Providing tools to sharpen and enhance academic skills.

  • Assisting in goal setting and planning for future educational and professional endeavors beyond high school.

The Delta GEMS logo symbolizes a gemologist's ability to discern the hidden treasure within unpolished jewels using specialized tools. Similarly, Delta GEMS sees the potential in young African-American women, likening them to polished jewels with multifaceted brilliance and potential.
